How Korean names work

A Korean name is a one-syllable family name followed by a (usually) two-syllable given nameKim Min-jun, Park Ji-woo. A handful of surnames are extremely common: Kim, Lee, and Park account for nearly half the country. Given names are chosen for the meaning of their syllables (often from Hanja), so Min can mean "clever," Seo "auspicious," Ha "summer / great."

How to use it

Use the Gender filter to switch between male and female given names, then hit Generate. Each result pairs a common Korean surname with an authentic given name. Click a result for details, save your favorites, and copy the perfect name for a character, story, K-pop persona, or online handle.

Tips for choosing a great korean name

  • 1Korean order is surname first (Kim Minjun); keep that for authenticity.
  • 2Stick to common surnames — Kim, Lee, Park, Choi, Jung — for a believable feel.
  • 3Most given names are two syllables; the meaning comes from the Hanja behind them.
  • 4Many given names are unisex — pick the one whose sound and meaning fit best.
  • 5Say it with even, gentle syllables (Ji-woo, Min-seo) — Korean names flow softly.
  • 6For K-pop or modern characters, trendy given names differ from traditional ones.
